Trauma Counselling

There’s hope. You’re in the right place.

Trauma is the experience of overwhelming, distressing, and life-threatening events which overwhelm our coping capacity. Trauma impacts our ability to stay present, grounded, and calm while impacting how we see ourselves, others, and the world. Are you safe? Are you lovable? Do you feel like a failure? These are just some questions which may resonate with you as you reflect on yourself and your past. These are also ways we feel because we experienced something overwhelming that chipped away at our sense of safety and identity.

Trauma can be a single, distressing event. Something you can look back and identify a major event in time that was traumatic. However, trauma can also be an accumulation of smaller, less intense but more frequent experiences that can erode our self-esteem, self-worth, trust in self or others or even the universe. Trauma counselling can be beneficial for any type of traumatic experiences because you deserve to feel safe in your body and in this world.

What does trauma counselling look like?

The goal of trauma counselling is to help an individual return to everyday life feeling confident, independent, assertive, and in control. This person exists within you but is hidden beneath layers of overwhelm, confusion, and fear. Trauma counselling endeavours to work through each layer of trauma as it impacts you to uncover the person you were always meant to be. Layers can include how we show up in our day-to-day right now, including how you might continue to feel degrees of fear, frustration, overwhelm, anger, or not feeling anything at all. It includes understanding who you had to become to stay safe, and grieving the loss of the version of you that never got to be.

Trauma counselling focuses on a few key principles:
